Compilation

I have gotten lazy the past couple of months and let these films build up without blogging about each. So, instead of either spending hours to get this done or throwing it down the toilet, I've decided to do a mini-critique of each. Enjoy, those of you who still look at this thing.

Born Rich - 2 Stars - Slightly informative, but amateur.
Easy A - 4 Stars - Very Funny. Similar to Mean Girls.
Dear Zachary - 5 Stars - Real representation of a human tragedy.
American Teen - 3 Stars - Great vision. Seemingly fake.
The Social Network - 5 Stars - Still think about it. Great Dialogue!
Food Inc - 5 Stars - Very Informative. Well covered.
Iron Man 2 - 3 Stars - Visually appealing. Not my kind of film.
What's Eating Gilbert Grape - 4 Stars - Classic. Slow. Great acting.
You, Me, and Dupree - 2 Stars - Inappropriate. Slightly funny.

Date Night - 4 Stars - Enjoyable comedy. Good themes. Great pair.
Meadowoods - 1 Star - If I gave less than 1, this film would get it.
Remember Me - 3 Stars - Great twist into reality. Creative.

The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry

2/5 Stars

Christian film trying to compete in Hollywood. Just didn't cut it for me. The acting and writing were both extremely lacking. The film did have great moral moments and high values. It makes you think a little about how you, as a Christian, are impacting the people around you. I love what the film was trying to do, it just failed at doing it beautifully. Great themes and intentions, not so great delivery.

Acting: Almost unbearable
Writing: Juvenile
Cinematography: Manageable
Story Line: Great!

See it, might make you think.

Inception

Don't you want to take a leap of faith? Or become an old man, filled with regret, waiting to die alone!

5/5 Stars

Didn't want to see this film, but so glad that I was talked into it! The approach to the concept of dreams and the implementation of it blew me away. Of course, we all could talk about this for hours after watching it, so I will make this brief. I feel as though soo much thought and creativity went into making this a success. It is definitely original and striking. This film keeps you engaged and passionate the entire time. I would love to see it again in order to understand it better. It encapsulates this unknown world we all share called dreams.

Acting: Excellent
Writing: Phenomenal
Cinematography: Are you kidding!? Exceptional.
Story Line: Intriguing

See it, at least twice.

She's Out of My League

It moved...

2/5 Stars

I did enjoy this film, but its extremely crude and has bad language. That makes up for part of the bad rating. The other part is due to the fact that its not original. You can tell what will happen in the film and it does. Nothing sets this film apart. It is funny and there are amazingly awkward situations, but doesn't keep me coming back for more. It does however encourage you to go for any girl no matter how gorgeous or out of your league she may seem. I'm sure high schoolers will have a different take.

Acting: Good enough
Writing: Crude, yet funny
Cinematography: Bland
Story Line: Typical

Skip it, better things to fill your mind with.

Edge of Darkness

CRAVEN!

2/5 Stars

Love Mel Gibson, the film just didn't do it for me. Kind of boring and unoriginal. I didn't seem to care who his daughter was and what she did. When we found out, I was uninterested all over again. The action and some combat approaches were appealing, but other than that, it was pretty bland.

Acting: Great!
Writing: Not so great
Cinematography: Expected
Story Line: Not captivating

Skip it. There are better films out there.

Toy Story 3

Well, FAO my Swartz!

4/5 Stars

I mean, come on, it's Toy Story 3! They successfully made three great Toy Story films. Loved the first the most still, then this one, then the second one. This one was by far the most sad, but a great ending to such and epic film series. The characters were all there making us laugh like always. I think there could have been a better plot and probably better developed new characters. On the whole, it was enjoyable and will always have my vote.

Acting: Amazing, duh!
Writing: Didn't meet expectations
Cinematography: Enjoyable
Story Line: Not my favorite

See it!! Great for the whole fam!

Crazy Heart

I keep feeling obliged to apologize for being less than you probably imagined me to be.

3/5 Stars

The previews pretty much sum this film up quite well. There are no surprises of any kind. It is a very slow film, but you get a great glimpse into the real life is a struggling human. This film captures the essence of those final chances we get to bring something great to this world. It is inspiring and warm, but also real and desolate. Not my cup of tea.

Acting: Phenomenal
Writing: Good enough
Cinematography: Fitting, not striking.
Story Line: Typical

Skip it, unless you want to take a nice nap on a Sunday afternoon.

Green Street Hooligans

Yes... cheeky slag!

4/5 Stars

Kept thinking of this movie well after I watched it. Every man would love to get caught up in this kind of gang and camaraderie. The thrill of actually punching someone and standing up for your manhood is every boys dream. Elijah Wood gets that chance. This was an enjoyable, not always predictable film. The language is bad, but is also smart. I enjoyed its originality and visual appeal.

Acting: Excellent
Writing: Convincing
Cinematography: Real
Story Line: Ups and Downs

See it. For mature audiences only.

Boondock Saints II

Let's do some gratuitous violence.

1/5 Stars

Loved the first one and hated the second. Just not as well written or engaging as the first. I fell asleep a number of time. Nothing beats the original. Just some classic lines and well thought out story-line. Because of my fatigue, I am not suitable to aptly give a review, but I do know that it was mutually agreed upon in the room as a fail. The tag line above pretty much captures the entire movie.

Acting: Mostly good
Writing: Below par
Cinematography: Expected
Story-Line: Can't remember

Skip it.

The Invention of Lying

Ok, you're annoying me. You're voice is shrill. Goodbye.

1/5 Stars

Just frustrated me throughout. I mean, its a cool concept for a film. I just wish they would have taken a totally different angle. As this man discovers that he is the only one in the world that can lie, he begins making up this "man in the sky" that is supposed to symbolize God. He begins to tell all these true and untrue stories about who God is, while all along lying that "the man in the sky" exists. So basically, this film is portraying God as a myth that we are buying into and throwing comedy and A list actors on top to add some sort of credibility. Sad.

Acting: Good
Writing: Yeah, right
Story-line: Neat concept, terrible delivery
Cinematography: Under-par

Skip it.

The Crazies

Don't ask me why I can't leave my wife and I won't ask you why you can.

5/5 Stars

Great thriller! Great beginning scene. Of course it had it's cheesy moments, but it kept me on the edge most of the time. I loved the creepy effect and how they could scare you by not necessarily even jumping out at you. This thriller will keep you on your toes. It seemed pretty logical as well. Except I still hate how people travel into the unknown with the lights off...

Acting: Believable
Writing: Dramatic
Cinematography: Well meditated
Story Line: Similar to most, but well done

See it. I've seen it twice now! Looking for my third.

Zombieland

Someone's ear is in danger of having hair brushed over it...

3/5 Stars

This film sure does start off with a bang. Pretty gory, yet funny at the same time. I take that back, the entire film is this way. It also has terrible language. I don't even like zombie movies that are only meant to be gory and scary. YET, this film is actually funny and comes about it from a different angle. It is very entertaining to watch the camera work and the usage of CGI. I surprisingly enjoyed it. Some of it is so sick its great.

Acting: Good enough
Writing: Clever
Story-line: Nothing extraordinary
Cinematography: Selling point

Prob should skip it, but I kinda enjoyed it... in a sick way.

Adam

I can see that you're upset, but I don't know what to do.

4/5 Stars

This is your not so typical comedic love story. Very enjoyable and entertaining from a fresh perspective. The film is slow in parts, but great nonetheless. Loved the well thought out dialogue and unique comedic timing. The characters are not seen in everyday films.

Astronomers especially would appreciate this film from more than one perspective.

Acting: Spotless
Writing: Rich
Story-line: Moving
Cinematography: Slightly above avg

See it.

The Natural

The only thing I know about the dark is you can't see in it.

3/5 Stars

Robert Redford - Just the man

This is your classic story about a baseball hero that just never gave up. I enjoyed the look and feel of the film. It is great for it's day in age! The only thing was that it was a little slow and of course predictable. If you are a baseball fan, you can truly appreciate the film. My heart simply wasn't in it as much as it could have been.

Robert Redford did a heck of a job, of course. I loved the dialogue and they inventive cinematography. This film goes to show that if you are truly gifted at something and want it bad enough, you should never stop at attaining it. Its heart warming, yet dated.

Acting: Classic
Writing: Simple, yet intriguing
Cinematography: Inventive for its time
Story Line: Predictable

See it if you love baseball or Redford.

The Lovely Bones

...He doesn't understand how much a father could love his child

2/5 Stars

Marky Mark - Kudos

Most of this film looked like that picture above. I had no idea that it was going to be so spiritual. It was a mix of Gone Baby Gone and What Dreams May Come. This girl that was murdered is stuck between Heaven and Hell. I loved the visual effects, just unexpected. It was odd and confusing at first. The film goes back and forth from real life to spiritual world. I didn't particularly enjoy it. I would rather not waste time watching her debate on whether or not to go to Heaven or try and help her family. I wanted to get more into the suspense and depth of figuring out who the murder was.

The main reason it only received two stars from me is because it was weird. I'm sorry. The acting was great, the story was believable, the writing seemed to work. It did keep my attention and intrigue. Susan Sarandon's character fit her perfectly. I feel as though, actually I know that it is her real attitude in life. Good job, Susan.

Two things I took away: Listen to your dog and listen to your instincts.

Acting - All, but the boyfriend were great
Writing - Better than most
Cinematography - The highlight of the film
Story Line - Unique, dull

See it if you want. I won't again.

The Hangover

Tigers love pepper... they hate cinnamon.

3/5 Stars

Bradley Cooper - Stud
Ed Helms - Great comedic subtleties
Zach Galifianakis - My new favorite comedic actor
Justin Bartha - Decent

Wow... extremely funny, yet extremely vulgar. I cannot recommend this one. Has some great one liners, but way too much language and nudity. I gave it three stars because it was a well developed film. I thought it was going to be stupid humor thrown on tape. It was, but it also had more of a story than I would have guessed. It didn't just throw a stand up routine on the screen, it was actually a moving, engaging film.

Yes, its extremely unrealistic. Yes, its stupid. Yet, somehow it keeps you engaged as to what all unfolded during that one night in Vegas. I am so thankful my nights in vegas for my friend, Tim Kortman's, bachelor party wen nothing like that. Actually, some of those parts would have been kind of fun, such as watching Brant White get knocked out by Mike Tyson or Tim marrying a stripper. Anyway, I've said too much.

Acting - Where do they find these people
Writing - Better than expected, yet probably improv
Cinematography - Subtle
Story Line - Intriguing

Don't See it. Skip it.

Dan in Real Life

Put it on my tab.

5/5 Stars

Steve Carell - Genuine. I like this guy.

I simply will never get tired of this film. It's funny, heart warming, real, and has a great soundtrack! This is a feel good flick. It makes you wish you had a family like this, yet thankful you don't necessarily. The part that reminded me most of our family was the talent show routine. We do a talent show every year at Christmas where the unique and peculiar talents of our family are revealed each year. Its enjoyable.

This film has a well developed story, slightly unrealistic at parts. I love the witty banter and comedic timing. Some scenes are so tense, you are forced to just burst out laughing. Its the perfect rainy day movie. (Voice Over) Clean, fun, and enjoyable for the whole family!

Acting - Spot on
Writing - Well thought out and witty
Cinematography - Not brilliant, not necessary
Story Line - Well developed

See it. Really.

Date Night

Unexpectedly Funny

4/5 Stars

Steve Carell - Same witty banter
Tina Fey - Mastered comedy

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. There were some scenes that I could have done without, but over all it was very enjoyable. It actually kept my attention though the second half was unrealistic. I figured that all of the funny scenes would be thrown into the previews, but was proven wrong. I actually laughed out loud a number of times. Then just as your enjoying this comedy, it reals you into a partially dramatic scene. I loved that fact that it was not all fun and games.

The series of events that this couple suffers through during the film are extremely unrealistic, but oddly understandable. You are rooting for them the entire time. I love the chemistry between Carell and Fey.

The only reason it didn't get 5 stars is because it barely made 4 stars. It just simply did not have enough gusto and was too unrealistic for my taste.

See it.

Away We Go

Away I went

2/5 Stars

John Krasinski - Both funny names
Maya Rudolph - I like them together

Please fast forward through the first scene... This film just simply did not have enough going on for me. It was very relaxed and slow paced. the plot did not develop much. For some reason, I was wondering the entire time where they went away from and never found out.

I do like the reality of the story. It is a beautiful representation of many US families that feel as though they missed the mark somewhere along the way. It goes to show that not everything is and needs to be cookie cutter.

Honestly, I don't have a whole lot more to say about the film, considering I fell asleep. You might just want to skip this review and see it for your self... then again maybe not.

Acting: Good enough
Writing: Semi-cliche
Cinematography: Dull
Story Line: Not captivating

Skip it.

The Boys Are Back

I have plenty of people to do something with, I just have no one to do nothing with.

4/5 Stars

This is not the most uplifting film in the world, but it portrays the realities of many people walking in it. This man comes to grips with hardship in full swing while struggling to maintain life as he now knows it. Not everything goes the way he plans. Trial and error seems to be his method. The overall theme is simply to say "yes" more. Too often we say "no" without any reason at all. Saying "yes" is "actually quite difficult, really".

The beauty and audacity of this film caught my attention. It is set in Australia, a place I am now in love with. The characters and plot seem realistic and down to earth. They try to go outside the normal as much as possible. They try to love in other forms. They try to simply life, but also have the face the reality of the harshness of our society and need for making a living.

I left off one star because I thought it should have taken us up more than it did. Don't get me wrong, the weight of the situations made this film set apart and real, but it almost seemed to try too hard sometimes. At times, I felt as though they were playing the sappy music too much in order to get more tears out of you. But all and all I loved it.

Acting: Great across the board
Writing: Great one liners
Cinematography: Captivating
Story line: Real and deep

See it, but know that its not a comedy by any means.

Hurt Locker

Tagline Tells All

3/5 Stars

The film definitely was as real as could be. I felt as though we were watching actual footage sometimes. The acting was phenomenal and the dialogue was believable. The situations were tense and the visual effects were addicting. I kept being drawn into each scenario. The only thing that kept taking me out (only to be drawn in again) was the lack of story line. I was waiting for the moment they started giving some character development or plot. I kept wanting to know more about who the characters were and what story was trying to be told. That only came in small doses.

You see, this isn't your typical film. It simply shows you many sides of war without giving you a story about particular people. It takes your through scene after scene to explain different sides of how war can be addicting yet traumatizing. Putting it all on the line for the sake of what is good. So, if you go into this movie with that understanding, you will do just fine. I simply wanted more of a story and less random tense war episodes. I wanted it to take me places that a movie of this caliber has not yet taken people. It did not.

Acting: Phenomenal
Writing: Brilliant
Cinematography: Captivating at times
Story Line: Missing

If you are into war movies and just car to watch some tense war moments, see it.

An Education

Knowing a famous author is better than becoming one.

4/5 Stars

Carey Mulligan - I'm falling in love
Peter Sarsgaard - Real

I actually enjoyed this film. I was hesitant at first. Yes, it was rather slow in areas, but made for a great pace given the subject matter. It does start to make you think what the point of an education is? Should it be top? Why are you getting one? What will it amount to in the end? Then sums up the answer to all of these questions quite nicely. I loved the accents, period, and scenery. It was all very captivating. This girl learns many lessons very early on in life. You feel as though you are walking through it all for the first time with her. You begin to question things you were once sure of. You begin to look through a different lens.

I believe the writer made an excellent choice in the setting and time for this piece. London in the 60's was quite enjoyable to watch. The writing was real and well delivered. It was almost too smart for the common girl, but was not distracting. The attire and vibe set this film apart. I was always looking for and at something. That helped keep my attention during the slower parts. I also like the fact that it was unpredictable. No, it didn't totally sweep me off my feet, but rather didn't hand everything to me as I expected.

Acting: Most of them were excellent
Writing: Smart and provoking
Cinematography: Beautiful
Story Line: Applicable and entertaining

See it.

Sorority Row

This is why I don't try to publicize my blog...

2/5 Stars

I am not a huge horror at all, but I actually thought this was a seemingly decent film at first. The story was somewhat believable, not SO predictable, and had you on your toes. Then, like most horror films, something went terribly wrong. It got way too out of hand and unrealistic. The overall story is not captivating enough and the murders are way to graphic and hokey. I actually fell in and out of sleep from the second half on. Therefore, I do not have a very good movie critic. My apologies.

I would say that those of you that like to laugh at stupid horror films (as I do occasionally) might actually enjoy this one. I simple cannot recommend it. It falls into the typical hole of every other film you take two looks at the cover of and know there is nothing good behind.

Acting: Decent at times
Writing: Did they really say that?
Cinematography: Dull
Story Line: It didn't matter

Don't see it.

August

"I'm not a business man, I'm a business man"

3/5 Stars

Josh Hartnett - Perfect fit, excellent job

I actually liked this film. It was well written and passionate. The acting was exceptional. The dialogue was real and not overdone. And even though it was flooded with a lot of business jargon, I was able to fight through it.

Au contrar, the film was a little slow and pretty predictable. The F bomb was dropped wayyy more that I would have liked it to be, although seemingly fitting for this obnoxious character Hartnett undertook. This film reveals how miserable and over-demanding the lifestyle of an extreme business man, who is only money hungry, can be. Though in the case with this film, the entrepreneur came to his senses about what really matters in life and redeemed himself.

Acting: Real
Writing: Well meditated
Cinematography: Fitting and moving
Story Line: Typical

Maybe just watch it on TV to obliterate the cursing and nudity.

2012

Well, I wish Danny Glover was the Pres.

1 Stars

John Cusack - I like him
Amanda Peet - Not believable, but hot
Woody Harrelson - The man

So this is not my type of movie at all... I am trying here. All of the actions sequences were just sooooo unrealistic. Yes, I know that this is what this movie was riding on, but you could have done a better job of making the grand escapes truer to life. Probably the most unrealistic sequences I have ever seen in a film. People finding others amongst a billion, escaping the sinking of the earth in a stretch, flying a few massive planes in high intensity situations with a basic knowledge of flight, dodging lava balls in a van, jumping obstacles equivalent to Evil Knievel, and so on. On top of that, the story line and basic and predictable. We all knew what was going to happen... and it did. We were not even given time to be drawn into the characters. So, in the midst of this chaos, you can tell we are supposed to be captivated by loss and salvation, but I simply was not at all. Terrible acting as well.

I will give it credit for it's amazing special effects. The visual appeal was more interesting to watch than Avatar, for a dude. It was just cool to see how they were going to take everything down. That is the main reason I watched. All in all, if the world is coming to an end, we are all going down, but God promised a second coming. So, if we're all going to die, I think He'd take a trip down before that instead of looking down and being like, "Man, I missed my chance". He doesn't miss things. But, either way, we would see Him here or there, so no worries.

Acting: Pretty Terrible
Writing: Even worse and cliche
Cinematography: Captivating
Story Line: Predictable

If you are in to apocalyptic films with special effects, see it. Otherwise, skip it.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

Uniquely Entertaining

4/5 Stars

Robert Downey Jr. - Phenomenal

I have to be careful with this one. As much as I liked, I probably equally as much should not have. It is not a very 'nice' film. I thoroughly enjoyed the original writing and acting this film birthed. It was so different, witty, and intentional. It broke the laws of most film institutes and pulled you into this unlikely story. This film also kept you in anticipation of how this whole mess was to be solved. Twists came from every direction that continued to point you to the end result. I loved its ability to humanize certain celebrities and professions.

I did not give it 5 stars because of some unnecessary crudeness and behavior. I also was taken out of the film during some of the ever so unrealistic action sequences. I wish they would have kept it more real and plausible than it turned out.

Acting: Superb
Writing: Most Excellent
Cinematography: Too entranced in the story to notice
Story Line: Unrealistic, yet wildly entertaining

Mature audience only... See it.

FInal Destination 4

The Finally Destination

1/5 Stars

I am just glad there are all finished now. I was getting pretty sick of pretty much watching the same film over and over, but I had to finish. This one was by far the worst of them all. Every aspect was terrible. You'd thought these actors have never recited a line before, the writer grabbed every cliche line known to man, and the direction was exasperated it began not be funny again. All of the deaths were far fetched as usual, but more the most extreme I have ever seen. In the filmmakers defense, we did get a lot of laughs out of it. Then again that might not be a compliment.

The reason it has 1 star... well just read the tag line and look at any pic from the movie you'd like, you'll see why.

Acting: Worst yet
Writing: Even worse
Cinematography: Creative
Story Line: Most typical

Dont. Ever. See. It.

Star Trek

You know how I feel about these...

3/5 Stars (no pun)

The only two reasons I saw this film were because of J.J. Abrams and Robby Stone. If it weren't for them, I wouldn't have given it a second glance. I just do not like sci-fi, mystical, fantasy films. None of them. I can respect some (Lord of the Rings...), but don't usually enjoy them.

Let's bring things back down to Earth. The film as good as it could be, being set in space. The visual effects were amazing. It actually developed a plot, overcame evil, love, heroism, comedy, blah blah. I accredit it all to JJ. I am a fan of his work (if you couldn't tell). It hit you with the unexpected and kept you on your feet before slowly lowering you back down. I occasionally forgot that we were in space, traveling back and forth through time. Props to Robby for the recommendation.

The reason it only got three stars is because its sci-fi and I can take a star away based solely on that considering its my blog and because of the unrealistic fight/action sequences. They posed as a distraction. Basically its just hard for me to give the epitome of sci-fi films a 4 (but i secretly want to).

Acting: Mostly believable
Writing: Amazing
Cinematography: Enticing
Story Line: Its in space...

See it. I might do it again.

Final Destination 3

Gotta Love 'Em

2/5 Stars

I simply became a fan of the first two and had to finish off watching the rest. I don't even know why I am such a fan, they are not even that good. The same thing happens in each film...

Anyway, for this particular film, I liked it, but can't critique it very well at all. The acting is sub par, the writing is terrible, the effects are hokey, the scenarios are unrealistic (as they always are) and the language and nudity doesn't help. I do however, like how they sit and ponder for hours on end of how to simply kill off each person. Some of them, though unrealistic, are creative and funny to watch. My roommates and I simply think of these films as comedies. The only reason I gave it a 2 instead of 1 is because of that factor right there. It does make you tense up a few times, but more laughs follow.

I will think twice, however, the next time I get on a roller coaster... Just as I have every time I've boarded a plane, seen a logger truck on the wet interstate, been to the dentist, the doctor, the garbage disposal, the train tracks, a car on a bridge, the weight room, a fair, fireworks, knives, hardware store, movie theater... but hey, its just a movie.

Acting: Terrible
Writing: Even worse
Cinematography: Trying
Story Line: Same as the rest

Don't see it, I just have a knack.

The Box

Not by choice

1/5 Stars

Cameron Diaz - Used to like her
James Marsden - Awkward opposite

I had heard this was a terrible movie, so I intended on napping through it while my mom watched. I would have been successful too, had it not been for the random explosions of volume the film provided. It would have been a much better use of my time.

The acting was just terrible on all accounts. I would normally stick up for these leads, but they for some reason were not on their game. The dialogue was unconvincing and hokey. This film simply tried too hard to be uniquely creepy. The random characters and signs seemed all too misleading. I was confused and unconcerned. It takes you through a vicious loop of a meaningless plot. In the defense that you might assume I hated it cause I was in and out of sleep, my optimistic mother hated it as well. You live and learn.

Acting: Terrible
Writing: Unsuccessfully trying to be something it couldn't
Cinematography: Simple
Story Line: Are you kidding me

Skip it, really.

Everybody's Fine

Potential tear jerker.

3/5 Stars

Robert De Niro - Older than he looks here
Drew Barrymore - Convincing
Kate Beckinsale - Love of my life
Sam Rockwell - All I can think of is him in The Green Mile

This was a decent/humbling film. It tells stories of how life may not pan out exactly the way you intended it to be. You may not be as successful, perfect, or living up to the standards others have made for you. But through all of this, we can find happiness and love if we are honest. I like the journey this father takes to become closer to his unfolding family. There are a lot of loose ends that all start to come together. I really enjoyed the portrayal of their younger selves in opportune times (except they could have picked a more fitting "young Drew Barrymore" since we all know what she really did look like).

Although it had great intentions and entertained me, it proved a bit unrealistic and slow. Some of the dialogue took me out of the element, but that was probably just me. I do appreciate how it wrapped it self all together in the end and left you feeling hopeful amongst this depressing plot line. My mom cried a lot.

The reason I took two stars away was first because it wasn't the most enjoyable 2 hours I have ever spent, and secondly, it lacked originality. All in all, I believe it was a success for the filmmakers purpose and vision. It had me thinking about it and how it applies to my life long after I saw it.

Acting: Couldn't have done better.
Writing: Almost great.
Cinematography: Clever.
Story Line: Great intentions and themes.

See it.

Valentine's Day

My Girl

1/5 Stars

Going against the fact I knew it was not going to be a good film, I took my mom and went to see it for my girl, Julia Roberts. Loved every moment that she was on the screen, just hated the rest of the film. This wannabe Love Actually flick just flopped. As many huge celebrities it carried, the acting was just terrible. Its rare that a film will have that many celebrities and actually be good. The exception is Ocean's 11. Usually, they are trying to make up for something and in this case it was the terrible script. It simply did not come to life for me.

Taylor Swift is not an actress. Don't get me started on that Taylor Lautner. Jessican Biel lost too much weight. Patrick Dempsey played a doctor, imagine that. Jamie Foxx, I can't stand. Jennifer Garner did a great job!

I will say there were rare moments when I actually laughed out loud and that Ashton Kutcher, as much as I don't like him, did a good job. I always like seeing George Lopez as well. It was fun to see all of the places I used to go to as well when I lived in LA. I would imagine most of their budget was spent on actors, considering all the scenes took place in LA, no special effects, and no great script.

Acting: Mostly terrible
Writing: Even worse, so many cliche lines
Cinematography: Very basic
Story Line: That killed it

If you're a girl into chick flicks with nothing else to do... see it.

Gosford Park

Who Done It?

2/5 Stars

Michael Gambon - Holds his own
Clive Owen - Not much range
Ryan Phillippe - Believable

I was just bored during this film. Its another one of those dinner murder mystery type. Personally, I loved the movie Clue 10x fold. This film even makes fun of itself when two characters are discussing a horrible film one is producing:

Morris Weissman: Well, not really. Most of it takes place at a shooting party in a country house. Sort of like this one, actually. Murder in the middle of the night, a lot of guests for the weekend, everyone's a suspect. You know, that sort of thing.
Constance: How horrid. And who turns out to have done it?
Morris Weissman: Oh, I couldn't tell you that. It would spoil it for you.
Constance: Oh, but none of us will see it.

That pretty much sums up this film. I didn't even care who did it and why. I, along with most of the characters, was even glad that it had been done. There was simply not enough plot or gripping story to make me care. In fact, every other scene was someone cheating on someone else sexually. And by the end of the movie you are not left satisfied at all. It didn't seem to come full circle. Kind of just leaves you there.

The reason I didn't give it a 1 is because it had great dialogue. The absence of words in most cases drew me in. So many times films use so much dialogue and too much rambling to explain things. This film was concise and deliberate. It made me try to hang on to every word, even though I could hardly understand half of them with their terrible accents, seriously.

Acting: Above average
Writing: Great
Cinematography: Nothing stands out
Story Line: Unoriginal

Skip it.

Scarface

Anticipation of the famous line was killing me.

3/5 Stars

Al Pacino - This made him
Michelle Pfeiffer - Strung out

This film was well done and I can see why it was praised in its time. The ultimate guy film. It had a little of everything, but a lot of violence and F bombs (you were warned). I appreciated the way it was put together and the smart dialogue.

Yes, confusing at times. Yes, slow at times. Yes, outdated. Yes, typical mobster/drug dealing movie. But it kept me attention, kept my focus, kept me in anticipation, kept me surprised, and kept doing its job of entertaining me. It did run a little long. All profanity and bad acting extras aside, its decent.

Acting: Almost all superb
Writing: Unique, harsh
Cinematography: Good for the era
Story Line: Typical with some twists

The reason it got exactly a three is because even though this isn't my typical appeal and favorite era, I was intrigued and engrossed in Pacino's abilities.

Try and see it, but be prepared. (longevity and profanity)

Law Abiding Citizen

My first film of 2010...
Honestly, its been a while since the I've seen it, so forgive my memory.

4/5 Stars

Gerard Butler: Excellent.
Jamie Foxx: Never liked him.

This is a smart film. It keeps you on your toes. It keeps you thinking. It makes you think about of flawed justice system. The emotional attachment might not be there, but it gets its point across. Its a good thing this situation falls into the lap of this unordinary American.

Not much of a family movie. There is profanity and some grotesque scenes. More of a dude flick if you will.

Acting: Most all of it was excellent.
Writing: Smart and to the point.
Cinematography: A little above average. Nothing Crazy.
Story Line: Pretty basic premise with intriguing turns.

The reason its not 5 stars is because its semi predictable towards the end, it has Jamie Foxx, unrealistic, and it didn't provide anything I've never seen before.

See it.

Inglorious Bastards

"It's a BINGO!"

5/5 Stars

Brad Pitt: Warming up to him, Excellent
Christoph Waltz: Brilliant
Diane Kruger: Love/Like relationship

I can't say enough about this film. From the first scene till the last, it had me intrigued. The way Tarantino creates his films is obviously like no other. My heart was racing the entire time either out of tension, laughter, excitement, brutality, or laughter. It truly keeps you on edge anticipating the ultimate climax.

I love the way Tarantino creates suspense between two characters. Less is more. Brilliant twists and turns to set up each scene. The dialogue was straightforward and witty. Each actor delivered. Waltz never caught me looking away.

Acting: Top Notch all around
Writing: Genius, meditated
Cinematography: Exciting and new
Story Line: Intriguing and heroic.

There is violence, language, and gore. Ratings are there for a reason. Don't watch with a week stomach or a dislike for Tarantino.

See it.

Fame

Not Fame

1/5 Stars

No Actors

The thing is, this had nothing to do with the original Fame musical. None of the same characters, music, or plot. Not that I remember it all that well to begin with, but I at least know none of the songs were the same. That part was semi disappointing.

Other than that, it sucked. The acting, singing, and story line were all hokey. I am just not in to these kinds of films. They are real corny and amateur. I guess it leaves you with a feel good feeling though.

Acting: Below par
Writing: Yeah, right
Cinematography: Elementary
Story Line: Too dreamlike

The reason it at least got a 1 is because I won't give a 0 and the message had good intentions.

Skip it.

Post Grad

I was forced, should have ran.

1/5 Stars

Alexis Bledel: Cannot stand...

I can say I don't like her as an actress and a person, having met her three times (In LA). She annoys and frustrates me. How do people like this end up in Hollywood? Well, never mind. She ruined any part of this film that might have been great.

My mom wanted me to watch this with her cause it has Zach Gilford (Matt Saracen from Friday Night Lights in it). I figured I could take a nap during it... if only I were so lucky.

It seemed to have all the hopes of being another Little Miss Sunshine (great film), but lacked all the parts. The writing, acting, and directing was all sub par. Great potential gone bad. There were not many parts about this film I enjoyed. Maybe the occasional chuckle, yeah I said chuckle. That's it.

Acting: Next time hire actors (excluding Zach)
Writing: Almost there, felt empty
Cinematography: Someone was behind the camera?
Story Line: Typical and predictable

The reason it didn't get a 0 is because I would never give a film that at least made it into the public eye a 0, they must have done something right. Just not sure if they did enough right things to deserve a 2.

Don't see it.

Paranormal Activity

Its a movie...

2/5 Stars

Actors?

Yes, of course this stuff is real. I am not saying its not and that I don't believe in it. I just don't mess with it, rightfully so.

That being said, this film did not do much for me. I have to admit I am not usually a fan of scary movies in the first place. I am just thinking too much about the actors, stagehands, camera angles, and such to really get into them trying to freak me out. Maybe, it my way of protecting myself. The film did have some extremely tense moments that were shot well, other than that, it was pretty basic.

Some parts were hokey, some were predictable, and some were laughable. I tried so hard to restrain myself from commenting in order not to ruin the film for others.

Acting: Below Average
Writing: Seemed to be all improved
Cinematography: Did a great job for having been shot all in one house.
Story Line: Blare Witch...

The reason it didn't get 1 star is because it does grab you at parts, it was successful on a really small budget, and it kept my attention.

Just skip it. Cheap scare.

Julie and Julia

Yes... I saw it... It was given to me free from SAG.

3/5 Stars

Meryl Streep: In Top 10 Best Actresses
Amy Adams: Likeable

I thought this was actually a decent film. Honestly, it kind of sparked my ambition to review every film I see in 2010. How about that? It is a feel good movie that is encouraging to our society. I always got a kick out of Julia's excitement, while at the same time annoyed with her voice.

Yes, it is built around Julia Childs and cooking, but is actually kind of enjoyable to watch. I did fall asleep toward the end. I don't think they wrapped it up very well though. Its just interesting to see if Amy Adam's character is going to make it through her one year goal.

Acting: All around great
Writing: Streep brings it to life.
Cinematography: Basic, not a highlight.
Story Line: Inquisitive

The reason it got three stars is because it had as many high points as low points...

Ummm, not a necessity.

Up In The Air

More like, down to Earth.

3/5 Stars

George Clooney - Pretty much the same, but good

I just really enjoyed this film for reasons I might not be able to express clearly. I loved its use of camera work and silence. Some of the scenes draw you in with no music whatsoever. That tool has proven pretty powerful (No Country For Old Men). I liked the smart dialogue and wit. This film had the potential to be very slow and boring, but proved to only be a little slow and more interesting.

Some scenes take you to face reality and others take you to an unrealistic scenario. All in all they did a good job with a film about a dude that fires people for a living. They bring you up and down again. The life of a traveler might seem appealing at first, but proven to be very lonely and monotonous without a partner. There were some great dialogues about life and relationships. Obviously Christ is the ultimate fulfiller, but they got some stuff pretty close.

Acting: Good enough
Writing: Human and intellectual
Cinematography: Perfect fit for the mood of the film, great!
Story Line: Depressing, yet humbling

I almost gave this film 4 stars, but took it back simply because it just didn't feel right in that category with all the other 4's. It wasn't just lacking one thing, there were a few things I enjoy to see more in films. More motion is one of them.

Sure, see it. Some sexual scenes and conversations.

North by Northwest

Cary Grant fan

2/5 Stars

Cary Grant: Always a pleasure

I know, I know this is supposed to be a classic. Thing is, I just don't much like watching the old classics. I don't get much out of them. I can appreciate the film for what it was in its time, but times have changed. It was kind of slow and boring. The plane scene on the cover was some of the most action, but not even suspenseful.

Of course Alfred Hitchcock is the man. I will always support a film of his. He began to bring so much to the table with innovative, thriller films. I still have a collection of shorts from him that I need to see and review...

Acting: Classic overdramatic type
Writing: Stale
Cinematography: Ok, for its time
Story Line: Creative, yet dull

The reason it didn't get just 1 star is because it has Cary Grant, its a classic, and Alfred Hitchcock.
I'd say see it, but just sit back, relax, and enjoy. Don't get upset if you fall asleep.

Precious

Hard to swallow.

4/5 Stars

Mo'nique - Her awards say enough
Gabourey Sidibe - Great, couldn't been better

As dark and real as this film was, I thought it was very well put together. It's not one that is going to cheer you up and make you feel good, but I have been itching to see it again. It's raw scenes are hard to sit through, but that tells you they are getting their point across. There are a few glimpses of hope and humor. We are truly blessed as a people.

Pretty extreme profanity and explicit scenes. I initially wish this film did without that, but it wouldn't be the film it was written to become...

Acting: Superb for the difficulty of the script
Writing: Harsh, but picks you back up
Cinematography: Real
Story Line: Hard to swallow, but necessary to understand

The reason it didn't get 5 stars is because the story could have been fuller and there could have been a wider arrange of characters... and more highs (but they didn't want that)...

Don't have to see it, but won't forget it.

Fifty Dead Men Walking

What?

2/5 Stars

Ben Kingsley - Who?
Jim Sturgess - Fine job

Honestly, this is going to be a terrible review. I barely remember this movie at all. I couldn't even tell you what it was about. It was weeks ago when I saw it (I promise I am not going to continue to take this long to review a movie) and fell asleep a little. I remember it giving away the ending at the beginning, being really slow, confusing, but picking up towards the end.

Acting: Good
Writing: Really creative
Cinematography: Normal
Story Line: Confusing

The only reason it got two stars instead of 1 is because I remember being able to appreciate some aspects of it, just forgot what they were.

The reason it didn't get 1 star is because of the writing and the fact that it almost make a great comeback from the slow pace.

Don't waste your time.

Rebel Without A Cause

Movie Without A Cause

1/5 Stars

James Dean: Naturally Great

I don't care how classic James Dean was, he could not carry this film. I am not even sure what the point of it was. The little kid in it was so confusing and weird. He kind of creeped me out with his obsession to Dean's character. It was fun to look back on the classic Hollywood days, but other than that, I couldn't find a reason to watch it.

Watched this with Robby and Jason. Robby fell asleep (or was that me), Jason went to bed. What does this say?

Thought it was picking up towards the end, but it failed.

Acting: Terrible, other than Dean
Writing: Pointless, but decent
Cinematography: Ha ha
Story Line: No, this was pointless

Maybe there is something huge that I am missing here, but this film just did not interest me.

Don't See It.

Love Me If You Dare

Top romantic comedy (of sorts) of all time!

5/5 Stars

Guillaume Canet - Few better
Marion Cotillard - I think I'm in love

Needless to say, I really really enjoyed this French film. It was visually appealing, beautifully spoken, wickedly stunning, and pleasantly witty. Its an original story with many twists. It keeps you curious about what's to come, yet unwilling to leave what's before you. It brings out the poet in me, ha.

The fact that it is all in French adds a beauty that is rare. The colors fantastically set the mood. The characters couldn't seem more real. It taps into that daring side of everyone that is waiting to explode. Some crude humor and scenes, but a hit in my book nonetheless.

Acting: They were acting?
Writing: Witty, thoughtful, timely, fluid, beautiful
Cinematography: One of the things that makes this film so brilliant
Story Line: Original and daring, if you will

The reason it got 5 stars is obvious.

See it!

In Bruges

Hmmm, let me think back...

2/5 Stars

Colin Farrell: Pretty good
Brendan Gleeson: Relatable
Ralph Fiennes: Same facial expression throughout

The premise is very simple and the film is slow. It mostly all takes place in Bruges. Some tense scenes, some violence, so great writing, some beauty, some extreme predicaments, pretty much somes it up.

After all that, I don't even remember what happens in the end. Sad, thats my memory for you.

Acting: Good enough
Writing: Great actually
Cinematography: Above average
Story Line: Boring

The reason it only got two stars is because it simply wasn't entertaining enough. It was depressing with no great resolution.

Don't See It.

City of God

I might have fallen asleep a little...

2/5 Stars

No main actors.

This film is centered all around really young kids in gangs. The teenagers run this town and will shoot whomever they please to get what they want. It is emotional and graphic.

You don't sit down to enjoy this film, you sit down to learn from it. The question is, whether or not what you learn was worth seeing or learning. I personally could have done without.

Acting: Some great! Others just terrible.
Writing: Very believable and fluid.
Cinematography: Actually a high point to the film.
Story Line: Semi confusing and complicated. It was hard for me to keep all the names and places straight.

The reason it only got 2 stars is mainly because I just didn't enjoy it. I don't often enjoy these types of films. Strictly violent with no attachment. I mean, just look on the cover how many characters there are. Choose American Gangster above this.

Don't See It.

Good Will Hunting

One of my favorite films of all time.

5/5 Stars.

Robin Williams: Classic
Matt Damon: Excellent
Ben Affleck: Actually, believable
Minnie Driver: Heart-warming

I must admit, I fell asleep during the first two attempts to watch this film. Once at a friend's and once on Samford lawn. Finally, gave it a third try years ago and loved it. This viewing was with AJ Burandt.

I can't think of enough great things to say about this film. Matt Damon's year of writing this script really show and paid off. It's smart, emotional, funny, and down to earth. This film leaves you feeling good about life and wanting to use it to its full potential. We all love those boy genius stories, this is one of them.

The fact that it launched Damon and Affleck's careers just adds to the story. It was their baby and they were lucky enough to birth it.

Acting: Excellent all around. (Casey Affleck need not be overlooked)
Writing: Intentional
Cinematography: Pretty average
Story Line: Compelling

I would warn you about the profanity. I didn't expect or deem it necessary to use so many F bombs. So, unless that overwhelmingly distracts you...

See it.

How do you like them apples?

Film Critiquing

Here we go again. I decided to keep track of every movie that I watched in 2010. I figured I watch too many films, but wanted to prove it to myself. Epiphany: why not try and make the most of what some might say is wasted time. I'll share my loves and hates about each film with whomever cares to read. Therefore, I can look back on the year and recall my film journey. Highs and lows, ups and downs.

So here I am... writing out what I think of each movie that I watch during the year of 2010. Some will be very outdated, some I will have been forced to see, some epic, and some we've seen a thousand times. Agree or disagree, this is what I thought. Enjoy.

All I have to say is it's a good thing I watched Avatar in 2009, or we'd probably be starting off on the wrong foot.
